GMPLS impact on network providerÂ's opex when compared to traditional approaches

چکیده
This paper provides a detailed analysis and modelling of the Operational Expenditures (OPEX) for a network provider. The traditional operational processes are elaborated and the expected changes when using GMPLS are described. GMPLS is promoted as a major technology for the automation of network operations. It is often claimed to allow the reduction of OPEX. However, detailed analysis and quantitative evaluation of the changes induced by such technologies is rare. In this paper we quantify the cost reduction potential of GMPLS. In case of a traditional network, we show an important impact of the used resilience scheme on the expenses directly related to continuous costs of infrastructure (floorspace, energy,...) and on the planning and reparation costs. Concerning the service provisioning costs, we show that GMPLS introduction leads to a reduction in the order of 50% of the OPEX cost compared to the traditional case.

This document describes problems, approaches and solutions in the area of network management, from the TIGER2 point of view. Higher manageability issues are tackled in six areas. 1) The hitless maintenance approach eases the work of the human operator by mastering maintenance tasks through automated processes. 2) The approach for energy aware routing exploits ideas of flow aggregation, and aims...
متن کاملDeployment and Validation of GMPLS-Controlled Multi-layer Integrated Routing over the ASON/GMPLS CARISMA Test-bed
The efficient accommodation of subwavelength client flows on optical channels is a current challenge for the optimization of resources in GMPLS-controlled optical networks. While the capacity of the optical channels usually exceeds 10 Gbps, connection requests show finer granularity. This paper concentrates on the design and implementation of the ASON/GMPLS CARISMA test-bed a GMPLS-controlled g...

متن کاملControl Plane Protection Using Link Management Protocol (LMP) in the ASON/GMPLS CARISMA Network
In the ITU-T ASON architecture, the control plane is responsible for providing intelligence to the network. The GMPLS paradigm pleads for a separation between the control plane and the forwarding plane. If the control plane is deployed disjoint from the forwarding plane, recovery mechanisms to ensure its proper operation are required. In this paper, on one hand, a quasi-associated mode backup c...
